Honoring our staff member, Wavie O’Grady.

In honor of Indigenous Peoples' Day, we proudly highlight Wavie O'Grady, Lead Family Development Specialist here at Susquehanna Valley United Way. Wavie is part of our Family Services Team and works with local families and their children to ensure they have the tools they need to thrive, no matter their background or circumstances.

Here is what Wavie wanted to share with you all today:

Shé:kon, Oh niyohtonhátye? (Hello, How are things going?) Wavie yónkya’ts. Wakenyen’kehá:ka. Wakenyáhten. (My name is Wavie. I am of the people of the Flint ”Mohawk.” I am of the Turtle Clan.)

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day! Above was a greeting in Kanienʼkehá:ka (Mohawk language), my family’s tribe. Growing up as an Indigenous person who does not necessarily look Indigenous was an experience, to say the least, especially being so involved and proud of my culture. That’s why today is an important day to me.

Here is a photo of my little nephew and me at a local powwow. He is actually wearing my very first regalia! Which was a very special moment for me. Powwows serve as vital gatherings for Native American communities, preserving and sharing our rich cultural heritage. Our elders initiated these events to ensure that younger generations could learn about their traditions, customs, and history. Additionally, powwows offer a valuable opportunity to educate the broader public about Native American cultures.

Today isn’t just a day for Indigenous people to celebrate themselves, but for ALL OF US to learn and acknowledge our culture(s). The Indigenous community is all about the preservation of our culture, and this involves each and every one of us!

I hope you will join me in honoring the day and that you learned something new! O:nen ki' wahi'! (Goodbye then!)
