Everyone Belongs: Honoring Mark Rusanowsky

Columbia County Homelessness Liaison, Central Susquehanna Opportunities, Inc. | Nominated by Megan Bair

Belonging is more than a feeling.

It is the assurance that no matter where you are — even in the most difficult chapter of your life — you are seen, valued, and worthy of support.

For our Everyone Belongs theme, we are proud to recognize Mark Rusanowsky, Columbia County Homelessness Liaison at Central Susquehanna Opportunities, Inc.

Mark was nominated by his colleague, Megan Bair, who described him as someone who consistently goes above and beyond to serve families experiencing homelessness throughout Columbia County.

Meeting Families Where They Are

Mark doesn’t wait for families to come to an office.

He meets them where they are — in parks, in cars, in tents, and in temporary spaces — ensuring they are treated with dignity and respect.

He coordinates emergency shelter placements, helps families navigate complex support systems, and advocates for the resources they need to regain stability.

But beyond services, Mark offers something equally important: time.

He listens.
He encourages.
He sees the potential in every person he meets.

Building Belonging Through Collaboration

In addition to direct support, Mark has built a coalition of service providers who now work more closely together to serve homeless families. By reducing barriers and strengthening partnerships, he has helped create a more coordinated and compassionate response across the community.

His work has not only provided immediate assistance — it has inspired hope.

As Megan shared, Mark has become a voice for families experiencing homelessness, sharing their stories in ways that preserve dignity while highlighting the very real challenges they face.

A Walking Example of the Mission

Mark pours his energy and creativity into helping families gain access to housing and long-term stability.

His efforts — both big and small — have made a meaningful difference in the lives of many.

As his nominator put it:

“Mark is a live walking version of CSO’s mission — Provide Opportunities. Empower Families. Strengthen Communities.”

Through his advocacy, compassion, and unwavering belief in human dignity, Mark reminds us that belonging is not conditional.

It is foundational.

For embodying what Everyone Belongs truly means, we are honored to recognize Mark Rusanowsky as a 2026 Kindness Award winner.
