Put a Book in a Child’s Hands.
Each year during Week of the Young Child, Susquehanna Valley United Way hosts Wee Read, a community book drive supporting our Family Services Parents as Teachers program. The books collected help us build a small library for the families we serve, ensuring that during each home visit, every child in the household receives a book to keep or share together.
From April 11–24, we are collecting new and gently used children’s books across our five-county region. These books not only support families enrolled in the program but also help meet literacy needs throughout our community. A simple book can spark imagination, strengthen parent-child bonds, and help build a lifelong love of reading.
New this year, community members can also make a financial donation to Wee Read. Monetary gifts allow us to purchase additional books and fill any gaps from the drive, helping ensure every child we serve receives a book.
Why Wee Read Matters
For many families we serve, books at home are a luxury—not a given. Wee Read helps ensure children have access to stories that build language skills, spark imagination, and create meaningful moments between parents and their children.
By putting books directly into families’ hands through our Parents as Teachers home visiting program, we help nurture early literacy and support children during the most important years of development. Together, our community can help every child grow up surrounded by stories.

What to Donate
New or gently used children’s books for ages 0–10
We have a special need for:
Board books and preschool books (ages 0–2)
Chapter books for school-aged children
Bilingual books (English/Spanish)
Children’s books featuring intellectual or developmental disabilities
Books should be in good condition with no torn pages or heavy markings so they can be enjoyed by the families we serve.
Where Donations Go
All books collected through Wee Read are distributed through SVUW Family Services’ Parents as Teachers program and other literacy efforts across Columbia, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder, and Union counties, helping families build home libraries and encouraging parents and children to read together.
Quick Facts
Children who grow up in homes with books are more likely to develop strong language and reading skills.
Reading together helps strengthen the bond between parents and children while supporting early brain development.
A single book can spark imagination, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.
